Best Wisconsin Bike Trips: 30 Best One-Day Tours for Young and Old Customer Review: Nice Resource, but Be Sure to Update
Phil Van Valkenberg provides 30 options for day-long bike trips in Wisconsin. Most of his options are not simply a single loop, but an area featuring multiple loop or straight-line trail options. Best of all, nearly every section of Wisconsin is featured in at least one of Phil’s trips. The local reader can, therefore, be assured of a nearby destination and the roving reader can, in all likelihood, find a delightful area in Wisconsin he or she has missed. Those in search of an urban experience are, however, for the most part neglected.
Each trip is described with a road map and a short written piece. The maps are not super-detailed, but provide sufficient information to bike the recommended routes. The few paragraphs that accompany each trip are little more than a brief rundown of the highlights of each featured area or a narrative of some facets of the trip that Phil has enjoyed. These passages are, indeed, interesting and provide some helpful tips; they do not, however, provide exhaustive information and they are not a thorough explanation of the routes.
You will also want to keep in mind that this book was written over a decade ago. While many of the routes are still usable, traffic patterns and, indeed, road routes have changed. Many of the eateries and taverns highlighted in Phil’s narratives also have changed, either going out-of-business or changing ownership. A little scouting is, therefore, in order before committing to a particular course recommended by this book or setting one’s heart on a particular recommended stop.
