Ghost Bike - Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award entry Ghost Bike is the story of Shauna Louvin, a Portland, Oregon social worker, who accidentally hits and kills a bicyclist. At the accident scene, the spirit of the dead man enters her body. Joffrey Rutherford is a wealthy jewelry designer who dislikes her low budget lifestyle. They vie for control of their now blended life. People’s lives are altered by the fatal accident: Craig, Joffrey’s flight attendant partner; Brad, Shauna’s polyamorous artist boyfriend; Lena, Shauna’s friend who is fiercely devoted to social justice and runs a donut shop that employs refugees; and Lucia and Sprite, Craig’s new roommates who make their living as mother/daughter escorts. Ghost Bike explores the temptations of money and the respect it often brings, and what it means to be good. The two spirits in one body is more parable than paranormal, as Shauna struggles with what some people call growing up, and others call selling out. Mostly serious, the edgy, character-driven story has comic moments and a darkly sexual subplot.
Customer Review: Good read!
Teresa does a great job of grabbing your attention right from the start. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and wanted to know more. And I loved the ending!
Customer Review: A twenty-first century nightmare
The first few chapters of Ghost Bike made me wish that the whole book was already available. I loved the interior dialogue of the characters. Bergen sets up her premise so well, that the future clash of characters is palpable and inevitable. I loved the fact that the protagonist was flawed. And I felt the isolation of both characters who didn’t have that one special person to call who will always come and pick you up from the hospital.
