Nerves of Steel : Bike Messengers in the United States Customer Review: Go Bex Go!
First this is a totally biased review. Bex, Becky, Rebecca Reilly was my college roommate, one of my best friends, and a personal hero of mine. I agree with other reviewers that a good copy edit would have helped the story shine through. But yes this is a self-published book and she busted her butt to get it out there. I only wish she knew what the book, which originally sold for $20, is going for these days, because she probably has a box or two of them sitting in her basement in Buffalo (and she’s probably still chipping away at the debt generated by publishing it).
My friend Bex is an incredibly creative, resourceful, dynamic and gutsy individual. We stayed in touch off and on through the years and I only knew half of what she was up to during her messenger journies. I read this book with a source of pride and joy for how my friend carved an identity for herself in her community through publishing newsletters, handling media relations, helping form and lead professional organizations and writing this book. But this is supposed to be about the book, so please buy this book. It really gave me a new respect and insight into a community which became such an important part of my friend’s identity and life.
Customer Review: The True Face of the Bike Messenger Life
This book, despite the numerous typos, was a joy to read. You get the true perspective of life as a bike messenger as well as the struggles of a woman trying to succeed in a predominantly male occupation.
Lambchop continued to work on behalf of bike messengers’ issues long after her book came out.
Too bad that Amazon only has used copies for sale at such exhorbitant prices. This, effectively, cuts-off access to this book to the general public. Even DC Courier, who used to sell the book directly, no longer has an online store to sell this book.
Sad that such an amazing book, which should be read more widely, is effectively cutoff from the circulation it deserves.
