Customer Review: Sweet Ride
I’d been looking over a period of years for a new bike - I wanted the low step through frame design (I’ve always had the diamond frames but am getting old and looking for ease these days) made of aluminum, a CHAIN GUARD for riding in cold weather with long pants, and no fenders (a rear rack keeps stuff from slinging up on your back). I wanted some gears for hills and headwinds but not 21 of them, and I wanted the whole beach cruiser look and feel. The main object of my desire was the Jamis Earth 3 or better. Unfortunately Jamis bikes are not for sale online and I live far from a bike shop and do not drive. I watched Ebay for something to no avail. Then one day I came across the Forge Sconset at Target.com and it was just right at a fair price and available online so I snapped one up before the Christmas buying season had a chance to deplete the supply. I ordered my Sconset and it arrived via UPS in a big cardboard box about a week later. The bike was packaged well and there is no damage to anything. I had to put the front wheel on, insert the handlebar stem into the steering tube, the handlebars were already inserted into the stem but had to be turned upright, install the pedals, saddle and seatpost (already coupled), adjust the front brake, get the chain on to the chain wheel (easy), and pump up the tires. The bike appears to be of good quality and much lighter than a typical beach cruiser. The handlebars are good looking and gracefully curved. They are very much like a Jamis cruiser bar but with softer geometry. The saddle was okay but not on a par with an after-market saddle (I like Lycra over good thick gel that does not bottom out like foam) so I have replaced that and the seatpost too. The post that comes on the bike is quite long and is the micro-adjust style and there is a quick-release lever for seatpost height adjustments. I had a Nashbar micro-adjust suspension post that fit perfectly so I’m using it on on my Sconset. The Sconset’s wheel hubs are black which struck me as unusual but I’ve installed a black seatpost, black front basket, black rear rack Sunlite Bicycle Welded Rear Rack For 26″ Bicycles, Black with black shopping panniers Basil Cardiff Rear Basket, Black so the black hubs fit the theme. Tires are nice fat black-walls. When they wear out I’ll replace them with white or gum walls just for aesthetics. I had a hard time adjusting the front brake during assembly - it seemed that only one pad moved in and out while the other pad just stayed stationary and too close to the rim but after reading online that often this is because the wheel is not installed straight I put the bike upside-down and sure enough the wheel did need straightening and after that the brake was fine. By the way both front and rear wheels have quick release hubs. The wheel base (hub to hub) is about 43″. My routes are both paved and unpaved and I’m looking forward to the comfortable ride a longish wheelbase offers. Two minor negatives - the chain wheel looks cheap but since it’s mostly hidden by the chain guard it doesn’t much matter. Also - the top downtube is not round like the rest of the frame tubing, it’s wide and flattened a bit. I think this is probably necessary for strength but it does detract a tiny bit from the overall good looks of the bike. The decals are fine and one has a hibiscus on it which suits my Florida cracker persona nicely. Thankfully the MADE IN CHINA sticker came off readily. I called the toll free number for Forge to ask about rear racks known to fit this bike and they did try to help and were very nice but unable to recommend a specific model. Today I took the bike out for a shopping excursion and after a few adjustments to seat height and fore/aft position and lowering of the handlebars it feels like a perfect fit. Everything works fine. I’m really glad I found this bike.
